A Busch did make it to the White House in 2016, President Obama joked to reporters and attendees on Monday. But he won a far different race.
“Now it’s 2016 there were some people who thought we would see a Bush back here in the White House this year, but they did not know it was going to be Kyle,” Obama said at an event honoring 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Kyle Busch.
Ever the comedian, Obama took delight in former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s presidential campaign crash.
At the onset of the 2016 primaries, Bush was expected to provide a sequel to his father’s 1992 clash with Bill Clinton. But nearly $100 million later, Jeb Bush, the younger brother of the 41st president, ended his campaign after the South Carolina primaries with just three delegates who went to the party’s national convention.
Obama also lauded Busch and his wife Samantha for their work in the community, in particular for donating wedding gowns to military brides and covering fertility treatment for couples.
