Hillary Clinton has pulled 7 percentage points ahead of Donald Trump in Michigan in the first statewide polls conducted after Monday night’s presidential debate.
The Detroit News-WDIV-TV poll released late Thursday shows the Democratic nominee leading Trump by seven points in both a head-to-head matchup as well as a four-way contest between the two major party candidates and Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson and Green Party nominee Jill Stein. The latter results show Clinton leading the field with 42 percent support to Trump’s 35 percent, while Johnson and Stein lag behind with 9 percent and 3 percent support, respectively. Nine percent of participants remained undecided when faced with those four candidates.
In terms of the debate response, 52 percent of likely voters believed Clinton won the debate, while only 20 percent believed Trump carried the night. Among their respective supporters, Clinton fared even better, with 88 percent believing she won to Trump’s 45 percent.
The Republican nominee also continues to trail badly among female supporters in the state, with Clinton claiming a 21-point lead among women. Among men, Trump has widened his lead from 1.5 percentage points in August to a nine-point lead now.
Neither candidate fared well in terms of favorability, with 52 percent and 61 percent viewing Clinton and Trump unfavorably, respectively.
The live-caller poll surveyed 600 likely voters and was conducted Sept. 27 to 29 by Glengariff Group Inc. and has a margin of error plus-minus of 4 percentage points.
