My Thoughts on Education

Two of the New York Times reporters behind a story revealing Donald Trump might have been entitled to avoid paying federal income taxes for years said Sunday that their bombshell is on solid legal footing.

In an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” reporters David Barstow and Susanne Craig said lawyers had backed up the paper’s decision to publish the piece, which was based on 1995 tax records provided by a source who mailed the documents to Craig.

Their reporting, including tracking down one of Trump’s former accountants in Florida, found that a $916 million loss Trump reported in 1995 would have entitled him to not pay federal income taxes for up to 18 years.

A lawyer for Trump has threatened legal action on the grounds that publishing the records was illegal and unauthorized by Trump.

“They are saying it’s ridiculous,” Barstow said of his own lawyers’ response.
