Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager said Sunday that the presidential race is still competitive because the country is “very polarized.”
NBC’s Chuck Todd on “Meet the Press” pressed Robby Mook on the fact that, despite all the negative hits Trump has taken, the former secretary of state has not pulled far ahead of Trump in the polls. Mook denied that it was a reflection on what the country thinks of Clinton.
“No, I think it’s a reflection that the presidential campaign process is competitive,” Mook said. “Our country, fortunately or unfortunately, is very polarized right now. People fall into their different camps. And people are concerned. And they want to see change.”
As evidence for why Trump would not be a change-maker, Mook cited a New York Times report suggesting Trump could have avoided paying federal income taxes for almost two decades.
“We talk about the rigged system out there. Donald Trump embodies that,” Mook said. “The idea that he didn’t have to pay taxes for 20 years, or at least that’s what The New York Times is telling us. So we feel very good about where we are. But this will be competitive up until the end, and we’re going to have to work hard.”
