The vice presidential candidates sparred over whose campaign was more “insult-driven.”
Tim Kaine recounted Trump’s derogatory comments about Mexicans, women, the federal judge handling a lawsuit against Trump University, John McCain’s war record, African-Americans’ living conditions, and President Obama’s birthright citizenship.
“I cannot believe that Gov. Pence will defend the insult-driven campaign that Donald Trump has run,” Kaine said.
Pence called the remarks an “avalanche of insults,” and Kaine apologized for them, saying he was only quoting Trump. But Pence tried to turn the tables.
“Ours is an insult-driven campaign? To be honest with you, if Donald Trump had said all the things he said in the way you said you said them, he still wouldn’t have a fraction of the insults that Hillary Clinton leveled when she said that half of our supporters were a basket of deplorables,” Pence said.
Kaine countered that Clinton apologized for that comment a day later, and challenged Pence to name a time when Trump apologized for something he said.
“You will look in vain to see Donald Trump ever taking responsibility for anybody and apologizing,” he said.
