Hillary Clinton fought tweetstorm with tweetstorm Friday, blasting Donald Trump in a series of Twitter posts in response to his own.
Clinton excoriated Trump, calling the Republican presidential nominee “unhinged” in an extended rant that forcefully attacked him over his comments about women.
“This is … unhinged, even for Trump,” Clinton wrote Friday morning, retweeting a conspiracy-fueled message that suggests Clinton helped the beauty queen become a U.S. citizen so she could invoke her during Monday’s presidential debate.
“Did Crooked Hillary help disgusting (check out sex tape and past) Alicia M become a U.S. citizen so she could use her in the debate?” Trump asked, accusing Machado of having a sex tape while making a veiled reference to an accomplice-to-murder allegation his former campaign manager raised Thursday.
“What kind of a man stays up all night to smear a woman with lies and conspiracy theories?” Clinton asked in a subsequent tweets. Trump’s Twitter tirade about Machado spanned 16 minutes, wrapping up at 5:30 a.m. An earlier tweet warning readers not to trust anonymous sources dishing on his campaign was posted on Trump’s account at 3:20 a.m.
“Alicia deserves praise for courageously standing up to Trump’s attacks. And he has the gall to blame her — and say he ‘helped’?” Clinton continued. “When something gets under Donald’s thin skin, he lashes out and can’t let go. This is dangerous for a president.”
Clinton posted a screenshot of an LA Times report citing a former Trump employee who said in a sworn declaration that she saw the real estate mogul tell managers that “restaurant hostesses were ‘not pretty enough’ and that they should be fired and replaced with more attractive women.”
“To Donald, women like Alicia are only as valuable as his personal opinion about their looks,” she wrote, linking to the LA Times article.
She went on to slam Trump for his past attacks on television personality Rosie O’Donnell, “an accomplished actor” Clinton said Trump “obsessively bullies,” and Kim Kardashian, who was pregnant when Trump said she had “gotten a bit large” and shouldn’t be wearing tight-fitting outfits.
“Pathetic,” Clinton said.
“We’ve heard Donald’s insults for years, and his policies reflect this disregard — even contempt — for women,” she added, going on to cite Trump’s comments on equal pay, abortion, pregnancy and wives.
“Trump on equal pay: ‘Do as good a job’ as men. Abortion? Should be ‘punished.’ Pregnancy? An ‘inconvenience.’ Wives working? ‘Dangerous,’” she wrote.
“While Donald continues day 5 of his Machado meltdown, we’ll be in Florida talking about national service,” Clinton said, teasing an upcoming event. “You’ll want to watch.”
