Hillary Clinton has opened up a 6-point lead over Donald Trump in a new CBS/NYT national poll released on Monday evening.
The post-debate survey shows Clinton winning 49 percent of the support of likely voters, including leaners, in a head-to-head match-up, compared to 43 percent for the Republican nominee. Before Monday’s showdown at Hofstra University, Clinton was running even with Trump.
In a 4-way contest, Clinton’s lead narrows to 4 points — 45 percent to 41 percent — with Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson garnering 8 percent support, and Green Party candidate Jill Stein receiving 3 percent.
Clinton has been riding a post-debate high, after having been widely perceived as the winner of the high-stakes face-off. Trump has since been on a self-destructive streak, feuding with former Miss Universe Alicia Machado, who he famously once called “Miss Piggy” for gaining weight during her reign.
Among likely voters who watched the debate, 32 percent thought better of Clinton after the event, while just 10 percent said the same of Trump. The poll also found that 36 percent thought worse of Trump after the debate, while 16 percent said the same of the former secretary of state.
The survey was conducted by telephone from Sept. 28 through Oct. 2 and polled 1,501 adults nationwide, including 1,217 registered voters. The margin of error for likely voters was plus or minus 4 points.
