A new video released by Hillary Clinton’s campaign alleges that “Donald Trump is a business failure who has gotten rich at your expense.”
“That’s what three pages of his tax returns show,” the video wraps by saying. “Imagine what he’s hiding in the rest.”
The video, posted Monday morning to Clinton’s Twitter account, follows the bombshell report from the New York Times, which published three pages of Trump’s 1995 tax returns Saturday night. Those pages showed Trump reported $916 million in losses that year, an amount that would have allowed him to avoid paying any federal income taxes for an 18-year stretch.
The GOP nominee’s surrogates worked furiously to spin the story on the Sunday morning political talk shows, labeling Trump as a “genius” who had wisely taken advantage of U.S. tax law. But Clinton’s campaign has pushed the notion that the Times’s story instead proves two points, that Trump is “not so good at business” and “he doesn’t pay his fair share.”
The video cuts quickly between clips of Trump himself saying “I’m really a good businessman. I’m so good at business,” and clips of cable news anchors questioning their guests about the nearly $1 billion the real estate mogul lost in a single year. The biggest soundbite in the video belongs to Sen. Bernie Sanders, Clinton’s onetime opponent in the Democratic primary.
“I’m worth billions, I’m a successful businessman, but I don’t pay any taxes,” Sanders says in the minute-long video. “But you, you make $15 bucks an hour. You pay the taxes, not me.”
“It certainly puts a new tack on makers versus takers, doesn’t it?” an unidentified female voice adds.
