Howard Dean is sorry for suggesting that Donald Trump used cocaine. But he demanded America’s news media apologize for not calling out Trump’s own dangerous use of innuendo.
“And so I apologize for using innuendo,” Dean told MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle Friday morning. “I don’t think it’s a good thing to do. I don’t think it’s the right thing to do. This entire campaign has been debased by innuendo.”
But Dean’s apology fell short of a true expression of remorse for accusing the Republican presidential nominee over Twitter of using cocaine after Trump repeatedly sniffed during Monday’s first presidential debate.
In particular, the former governor of Vermont and chairman of the Democratic Party critiqued the media for not doing more to stop Trump. Dean added that while he used innuendo during the debate, the New York businessman has built a campaign off of asking people to read between the lines.
“Where was the mainstream media calling out innuendo 15 months ago when Donald Trump started running for president of the United States?” Dean asked. “That’s what I want to know. Do your job.”
A surrogate for Hillary Clinton, Dean was condemned by some of his fellow Democrats for doubling down on his suggestion that Trump’s sniffles and manner were indicative of someone who uses cocaine.
