Bill Clinton suggested that there would be nothing untoward with keeping daughter Chelsea on the board at the family’s foundation if Hillary wins the presidency, even as it has announced other changes should the Clintons return to the White House in January.
During an interview with Charlie Rose on PBS, the former president replied, “Well, I hope so,” when asked whether his daughter would remain in her current position with the foundation. For her part, Chelsea Clinton told “The View” last Friday that she would remain on the board while declining to answer as to whether she saw it as a conflict of interest.
Noting that the foundation’s “first responsibility” is his Little Rock, Arkansas, library and presidential center, Clinton remarked upon its “highly regarded leadership program with the Bush library.”
“I might add that I believe when President [George H.W.] Bush was the president, he had family members on the Points of Light Foundation — wait a minute, he had Points of Light Foundation, nobody raised a peep,” Clinton said. “And Chelsea had three advanced degrees in public health, led our public service operation, and the things we do in America, if we can do it with only individual contributions, that are quarterly disclosed, there is no conflict.”
Clinton further dismissed any appearance of impropriety between donors and those who made commitments to the foundation during his wife’s time as secretary of state, remarking that his interlocutor was “playing the same old game” by asking questions, which Rose disputed.
“We’re spending the whole interview talking about this,” Clinton said, adding, “I just take it for granted that everybody knows what they do. So, let’s just get down to the interview.”
