Sen. Ted Cruz pledged $100,000 to the Senate Republican campaign arm on Tuesday, his most concrete move in support of the Senate Republican majority in two years.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been pleading with Republican senators to tap their campaign war chests in the battle for the chamber’s control. Cruz’s contribution came toward the end of a finance meeting and was viewed as “very generous” given his slim campaign coffers, an attendee said.
The donation came after POLITICO asked Cruz’s office about his lack of donations to help endangered colleagues on the ballot this fall. In 2014, Cruz transferred $250,000 to the National Republican Senatorial Committee, an organization he once had a leadership position in but later abandoned.
